How to rank in ChatGPT: what brands can actually influence

Updated 26 October 2026

There is no position to buy in ChatGPT. When it searches the web, it reads a set of pages and writes an answer that names some brands and cites some sources. “Ranking in ChatGPT” means making your brand one it names, and your pages ones it cites, for the questions your buyers ask.

What ChatGPT relies on

  • What the model already knows, learned from public text before its training cut-off. Brands that are widely and consistently described are easier for it to recall.
  • What it retrieves when it searches, for recent or specific questions. Here, pages that state facts clearly, in a form easy to quote, tend to be used.
  • Third-party sources: rankings, reviews, press, forums. Answers about “the best X” often draw on pages that already compare X.

What brands can do

  1. Write down the prompts that matter. Twenty to fifty questions your buyers would actually ask, by product, use case and location.
  2. Answer them on your own site, in plain sentences: who you are, what you do, for whom, where, at what price. One fact, one place, the same everywhere.
  3. Make the site readable by machines: crawlable without JavaScript, with structured data describing the organisation and its offers.
  4. Be present where answers look: earn mentions in the trade press, review sites and published rankings of your category.
  5. Measure, prompt by prompt, and repeat. Visibility in AI answers moves; one check proves little.

How agencies track it

Most agencies report citations and share of voice over a fixed prompt set, with a dedicated tool. These are the tools named by agencies in the ranking:
